There's Glitter in Your Hair

I was stopped the other day by street style blogger Mark of "There's Glitter in Your Hair". Check out his blog which he's reprised after a short hiatus and which has started to gain deserved traction.

Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar - New Interpretaions of a Modern Classic

Bell Jar £360 @ Jaggynettle.com
Jaggy Nettle, one of the latest companies to emerge from the Scotland’s growing pool of textile talent, has launched a range of exclusive hand-printed Scottish cashmere jumpers inspired by classic book covers - and a new website.

Taken from iconic literary works housed in Faber and Faber’s  80-year archive, the vintage book covers were the muse for the company’s new collection.

Created by ex-fine artist Jason Lee and textile designer, Emily Quinn, the range has been designed to challenge the concept of peoples' interpretation and judgement of others through the clothes they wear.

The new collection features selected titles including David Hare’s ‘Slag’, Samuel Beckett’s ‘Play’ as well as Sylvia Plath’s ‘The Bell Jar’ in limited editions of 10. Other items in Jaggy Nettle’s range include Harris Tweed and Johnstons of Elgin Tweed footwear and limited edition Japanese selvedge denim.

Taken from JazzyNettle.com. Go pay them a visit!

eBay Sale

http://comictan.com/most-organized-closet/
With a new season almost actually upon us (er...summer where'd you go?), my wardrobe has had it's annual clean out. Alas, its untrammelled depths bore items almost unrecognisable to me. Given that I've worn most of them only once if at all, this does not surprise me. With a vow never to impulse buy again...ever (promise, really), I've added these to my eBay store. Have a goo and see if there's something that takes your fancy. Hey, if you don't like it, you know where I live...

P.S. A few things I've learned during the cull....

1. My closet can be divided into three parts: hopeful, practical and delusional.
2.  A size 10 is not a size 12; nor is a size 7 shoe a size 8. I somehow manage to transpose these numbers.
3.  Despite a healthy selection of shoes, I manage to consistently wear the same three pairs.
4.  My understanding of 'basics' can be likened to that of Pythagoras' theorem - theoretically sound but practically imposible.
5. I still need more space...

Irish Red Cross - Please Give What You Can

An Urgent Message from the Irish Red Cross

Two areas of southern Somalia are now in the grip of the first famine the country has seen for 19 years.

A famine is when more than two people per 10,000 are dying every day and when children under five years old are suffering severe muscle wasting.

Unless we act soon to bring extra food and water, the International Red Cross fears that one child in every 10 will starve to death.

Please help save the lives of families and children in Somalia and in other parts of East Africa.

The International Red Cross is one of the very few organisations with access to Somalia's worst-hit areas.  In the Bay and Lower Shabelle regions, nearly 11% of children under five have severe acute malnutrition. This has doubled since March and may get worse. In all, more than 10 million people are suffering, thousands are dying.

Definition of famine:

More than 30% of children must be suffering from acute malnutrition
Two adults or four children must be dying of hunger each day for every group of 10,000 people
The population must have access to far below 2,100 kilocalories of food per day

Coco Chanel: A Life

Yesterday evening I attended the Literary Supper Club in Wilde - The Restaurant at Dublin's Westbury Hotel. Hosted by The Gloss magazine, the intimate gathering was made extra special by fellow guest and author of the recently published Coco Chanel, A Life - Justine Picardie. It was fascinating to receive such a privileged insight into an author's writing process and to learn how research led her to become suffused into every detail of Garbrielle's life. The book is available at Dubray Books (support your indie!) and all good bookshops nationwide and internationally. Coco Chanel, A Life by Justine Picardie, €14.99.

The Fashion Motto - Lovita Graham

I had the pleasure of meeting fashion blogger, writer and photographer Lovita Graham backstage at London Fashion Week. She took some amazing shots of the Joanne Hynes / Helen Steele show and also ran a great Q&A with Joanne too. These shots were taken of me on the cobbles of Somerset House. Not bad considering I hadn't slept for...at that stage...30 hours! I'd like to thank Lovita for featuring me and would urge you to visit her blog The Fashion Motto for a look at fashion's female innovators. A x

Ireland's Most Influential in Fashion 2010

I just received an email from Irish model Faye Dinsmore whose blog Faye is running Ireland's Most Influential in Fashion 2010 awards. "You're on the shortlist," informed the e-missive of my nomination for Ireland's Top Fashion Blogger. "How sweet!" I thought. I've since taken a look at the rather stellar award categories which boast all sorts of categories from Top Editor to Photographer and Magazine. It's a really positive idea given the 'Ho-hum. Life sucks. We have no money,' climate at the moment. Log onto her site Faye and vote for your favourite fashion influences. While you're there, take a stroll around her blog entries that detail the everyday happenings in the life of one of our own homegrown fashion exports.

The Silent Gallery

Shh!! Don't tell anyone but Irish designer Eilis Boyle has created an online pop-up shop in time for the Christmas shopping season. The Silent Gallery has ironically become the worst kept secret in fashion; in part due to my own loquacious nature. Anything this good can't be kept shtum. And by good I mean superlative cashmere scarves, bow clad arm warmers and shrugs that feel like a big cuddle on a Monday. Be sure to log on now and check out Eilis' virtual cabinet of curiosities. It's only open until December 10th so don't miss out.

Designer Eilis Boyle's Fashion Flash Mob

10th collection from Eilis Boyle on Vimeo.

~ A few words from designer Eilis Boyle ~

What?
'Earlier this year while chatting with Aisling Farinella I mentioned I had started working on my 10th collection. She said we should do something special and came up with the idea of doing a fashion film.  So she put together a dream team Rich Gilligan, Christine Lucignano, Zara Cox, Caitlyn Leckey and Fergal Brennan. We shot the film in a day.It was an exercise of the creative community coming together to make something different.'

Why?
'We wanted to do something new and video seems to have an important role in the industry at the moment. In a few minutes you can communicate a concept, a mood and it translates really well online.'

Who?
'We decided that we would do a simultaneous online launch, working with a lot of our virtual friends and colleagues. When the idea was proposed on Silent Storyteller people responded immediately and to date there are around 27 blogs from Australia to Canada who are taking part in the simultaneous launch.'

Maison Martin Margiela Dot Com

Fashion's most avant-garde design house - Maison Martin Margiela - launches the first MMM e-boutique on October 1st. As the 18th flagship store for the brand, the virtual space will parlay the Margiela ethos of no two spaces looking alike. Expect AW/11 collections for men and women played out in a post-modern space of photonegativity, processing codes and a retro MS-DOS font. (Note: I'm thinking the MMM design team are Douglas Coupland fans). Even more exciting is the limited edition of its ‘5 zips’ leather biker jacket reinterpreted in glassed indigo cotton denom for the first time since 1999. Only 100 are available for men and women and are available exclusively online at www.maisonmartinmargiela.com.

Margiela himself may have officiallyleft the building but it looks like the love for Belgian eccentricity is still very much open for business.

The Marylebone Hotel, London

You'd think I'd be done clacking on about London Fashion Week but a special thanks needs to be extended to The Marylebone Hotel. My boutique home away from home made running between shows and filing copy into the wee hours very easy indeed. This could have something (i.e. everything) to do with their stellar hospitality from a bottle of wine and fruit platter on arrival to nightly stealth drops of hot chocolate and shortbread; not to mention the velvet walls, Temple Spa aromatheraphy products, Jo Malone candles and built-in bathroom LCD TVs. Did I mention it's only 2 minutes from Oxford Street...with the feel of a bijou village. Oh, they're Irish too. Are you sold yet? Why not take a look at these pics (my iPhone drops weren't exactly Stephen Meisel quality) or log onto www.doylecollection.com for more deets.

Do Not Adjust Your Set...

We are experiencing technical difficulties. Do not adjust your set. Blogger.com is messing with my mojo and has plum gone and introduced a new template designer which has wiped some of my layout design. So if you are a link on 'Sartorial Sites' and have noticed er...you've gone missing; I have not wantonly deleted you. Please also note, this hoo haa has extended to bolding, italics, links and general formatting. Major apologies. Will have to sort this out...somehow. Interns? Anyone?
